Inspired and crafted by memories of Kevin's childhood Chinese calligraphy art form.
Linear and strong. Panels are joined together to make shapes, and shapes create volume. Kevin took inspiration from that and simplified it to a pure binary relationship between two planes. This earring is a play of the tensions. Two curved planes gravitate towards each other elegantly but yet to touch. The architectural and monumental quality has been fully expressed.
Kevin wanted a matte finish to the silver, so the curved planes complement the lights and shadows, emphasising the geometry's purity. He wrapped the silver sheets in paper and transferred the paper texture to the silver.
The texture reminded Kevin of the feeling of running his fingers through a stack of Xuan paper (宣纸) - one of his favourite things to do as a child.
The silver material is supplied locally in Aotearoa, New Zealand. It is produced by recycled waste from the Jewellery Industry within Australasia. All silver elements in this collection are made with Nickel free Sterling Silver (925 silver).
This earring has an asymmetrical nature of this earring. When ordering individual earrings, please note if the order is for the LEFT or RIGHT ear. If left un-noted, we will supply for the LEFT ear as default.
Please note due to the hand-made nature, there will be minor variations between each order. Care will be given to achieve consistency. The white-coloured finish to the silver is created during the process of pickling. It is a fine layer of silver that will be naturally polished by wearing. Please expect a more reflective finish after one or two weeks of wearing.
