We sat down with the designer, Kevin Yu, behind the Monolith Collection — a bold yet thoughtful range of jewellery that’s turning heads with its quiet confidence. Here's what he had to say about the ideas, the design, and the intention behind each piece.
Q: First of all, what inspired the name Monolith?
Honestly, the word Monolith felt right. It’s strong, grounded, and sculptural — like a single form standing with quiet power. That’s exactly the kind of presence I wanted this collection to have. It’s not about being loud or flashy — it’s about that solid, structural energy you feel when you wear it.
Q: The clasp design is so unique — how did that come about?
The Monolith clasp is actually a big part of the collection. With my background in architecture, I’ve always been drawn to the mechanics behind objects — how things move, click, slide, and feel in your hands. A clasp is the perfect example of that. I wanted it to be simple in form, but really considered in how it works.
I also love modular design — it puts the wearer at the center. You can join pieces together, re-style them, make it your own. That’s what excites me. My job is to build the system — and then let others take it from there. That’s an important part I love about designing jewellery.
Q: How did you choose which chains to include in the collection?
I looked through over 30 different chain types before narrowing it down to the first five: Olive, Curb, Paperclip, Foxtail, and Pearls. Each one felt like a personality — not in a way that defines a person, but more like a facet within someone.
I wasn’t thinking in stereotypes like “this one’s for bold people” or “this is feminine.” It was more about moods or qualities — playful, chic, loud, nostalgic, elegant, impactful. I selected each chain with a certain energy in mind, something I felt could connect with someone in a personal way.
Q: Can you tell us about the materials you used?
All pieces are made nickel-free — it’s hypoallergenic, easy to care for. I wanted the collection to feel elevated but still wearable day to day. The Foxtail chains, for example, are made from pure silver — they have this softer glow, they drape beautifully, and they just feel special when you wear them.
Q: We noticed the pearl necklaces are always in limited stock — is there a reason why?
Yes — the pearls are really special to me. I love collecting them when I travel, mostly in China when I visit my family. That’s why each piece is unique — they come in all shapes, colours, and forms. I never want to force them into perfection. I love their organic nature — it reminds me of us, all different, all beautiful in our own way.
Q: Who do you imagine wearing Monolith?
Honestly, anyone! It’s unisex by nature. It’s designed for people who appreciate detail, form, and quiet confidence. People who are drawn to things that are well made, a bit architectural, and have meaning behind them. It’s jewellery you notice — but not because it shouts. Because it’s considered.
Q: Last question — what’s one thing you hope people feel when they wear a piece from the Monolith Collection?
Empowered, and at ease. I want the piece to feel like it belongs on them — not something they have to grow into or live up to. It should move with them through all kinds of moments and still feel right. I also hope they connect with the values behind it — not using jewellery to define identity or status, but as something that reflects who they already are.
